Tips:

  • Budget and Reach:
The smaller your budget the smaller your target market needs to be. For example if you can only spend $5/day you won't have enough money to test multiple images in one ad (known as split testing).  If you increase your budget to $10+ you can try a couple of images to see which one works best. Try to keep your audience at under 100,000 for $5/day to start and 200,000 for $10/day to start.  This means you have a better chance of reaching people.
  • Increasing Budget:
If you find an ad is working be cautious about increasing your budget. Increase it by no more than 30% in a day and wait a few days for that increase to catch on or you will be flooding Facebook and messing with their algorithm.
  • Copywriting:
When writing an ad try using the PAS (problem, agitate, solution) formula where you call people in with a problem that exists for them, then agitate or explain it further and how it can affect them, then offer your solution which could be to get your lead magnet or check out your product. However, remember who you are talking to.  If you are retargeting to people who know you can make it more conversational or specific to the last step they took with you.
  • Images:
Images with nice contrasting colours work best.  Try not to use traditional stock photos and if possible images of you, your business or your products.  Whenever possible try NOT to use text on top of your images for ads.  Facebook is OK with text on a book cover or inside a computer screen in the photo for example.  But if you put text on top of your photo try to use the least amount possible - for example a small circle that says "free training".  You can build an image with text overlay at Canva.

Sample Ads:

Notice how many are retargeting and are conversational. Many of these are for services, but there are a couple for software and even ecommerce.  These types of ads can work in all industries.  Just change the messaging and photos to match what your market would want.
